Why dryer vent cleaning matters: the fire numbers
Lint that builds up in a dryer exhaust vent is more than a nuisance. Two national fire-data sources put numbers on it:
- U.S. Fire Administration (USFA): “An estimated 2,900 clothes dryer fires in residential buildings are reported… each year,” and “failure to clean (34 percent) was the leading factor” contributing to them. (Data from 2008–2010, published August 2012.)
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA): an average of 13,820 home structure fires per year involved clothes dryers in 2014–2018, and “one-third (32 percent) of dryer fires were caused by a failure to clean.” (Published June 2020.)
The two reports count fires differently and cover different years, so the totals aren’t directly comparable. What they agree on is the cause: in roughly a third of dryer fires, lint and debris that should have been cleaned out played a role.
What a dryer vent cleaning usually covers
A dryer vent runs from the back of the dryer, through a transition duct, to an exterior hood on a wall or roof. A cleaning company will typically clear lint from the full length of that run, not just the lint trap or the first few feet behind the machine. Before you book, ask each company to describe:
How they reach the whole run
Ask whether they clean from the dryer connection all the way to the outside hood, and how they handle roof exits or long runs.
What they check at the hood
Ask whether the exterior hood and its flap are cleared and checked so air can leave freely.
What they reconnect
Ask how the dryer and transition duct are reconnected after cleaning, and whether anything is replaced.
What it costs, in writing
Get the total price and scope in writing before any work starts, and ask what would change the price.
If a company recommends rerouting, replacing or adding to the vent rather than simply cleaning it, that’s a different job — see the licensing note below.
Florida licensing: why dryer vents are different
Most HVAC work in Florida is licensed contractor work. Air duct cleaning that requires removing grilles, coil work and duct repair fall inside the air-conditioning contractor definitions in s. 489.105(3), Florida Statutes. Dryer vent cleaning has been treated differently.
In Declaratory Statement 2014-125 (filed January 30, 2015), the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) concluded: “because there is no disassembly of the dryer exhaust system in order to clean the dryer vent using the method described, a mechanical contractor’s license is not necessary.” That statement was limited to the petitioner’s described method. Rerouting or replacing a vent is different, and a declaratory statement binds only the petitioner.
In Florida, duct cleaning that involves removing grilles and AC coil work is licensed air-conditioning contractor work — ask for the company’s CAC/CMC license number and check it at MyFloridaLicense.com; a county business tax receipt is not a license. This is general information, not legal advice.
What dryer vent cleaning typically costs
Typical ranges from EPA, NADCA, HomeAdvisor (2026) and Fixr (2026) — estimates, not quotes.
| Item | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Dryer vent cleaning on its own | $100–$170 |
| Dryer vent added to a duct cleaning | about $100 |
| Whole-system duct cleaning (EPA and NADCA), for comparison | $450–$1,000 per system |
Your quote will depend on the vent’s length, where it exits and how easy it is to reach. For the full breakdown, see the air duct cleaning cost guide.
Bundling a dryer vent with air duct cleaning
“Air duct and dryer vent cleaning” is a common request, and the bundle can save a separate trip. If you combine them, judge the duct-cleaning half on its own terms. EPA says to consider duct cleaning when there is substantial visible mold in hard-surface ducts, vermin, or excessive dust and debris, and NADCA warns consumers to “avoid advertisements for ‘$99 whole house specials’ and other sales gimmicks.” Read more on air duct cleaning in Orlando and the $99 duct cleaning scam.
Questions to ask before you book
- Will you clean the full vent run, from the dryer to the outside hood?
- Is any disassembly, rerouting or replacement involved? If so, what Florida license do you hold for it?
- What is the total price, and will you put it in writing?
- If I add duct cleaning, what is your CAC or CMC license number?

Frequently asked questions
How much does dryer vent cleaning cost in Orlando?
National cost guides put dryer vent cleaning at about $100–$170 on its own, or about $100 when it is added to an air duct cleaning. These are estimates, not quotes. Length of the vent run, roof or wall exits and access all affect the price, so ask each company for a written estimate before work begins.
Does a dryer vent cleaner need a Florida contractor license?
Often not, for a simple cleaning. In a 2015 declaratory statement (DS 2014-125), Florida’s Construction Industry Licensing Board said that, because there was no disassembly of the dryer exhaust system using the method described, a mechanical contractor’s license was not necessary. That ruling covered one petitioner’s method. Rerouting or replacing a vent is different. This is general information, not legal advice.
How common are dryer fires?
The U.S. Fire Administration estimated about 2,900 residential clothes dryer fires reported each year (2008–2010 data, published 2012), with failure to clean the leading factor at 34 percent. NFPA counted an average of 13,820 home structure fires a year involving dryers in 2014–2018 and found that 32 percent were caused by a failure to clean (published 2020).
Can I get dryer vent and air duct cleaning quoted together?
Yes. You can ask for both on one request, and cost guides report the dryer vent adds about $100 when it is bundled with a duct cleaning. Keep in mind that the duct-cleaning part usually involves removing grilles, which Florida treats as air-conditioning contractor work, so check the company’s CAC or CMC license number.
What if my dryer vent needs to be rerouted or replaced?
That goes beyond the no-disassembly cleaning described in the 2015 CILB statement, which was limited to the petitioner’s method. Before agreeing to rerouting, replacement or new vent runs, ask the company what Florida license it holds for that work and whether a permit is needed, and verify the license at MyFloridaLicense.com. This is general information, not legal advice.
